What does Warrior's Ethic really mean?

East | Air | The Wand

Pillar: Internal Truth and Ethical Choice

The East is the beginning, the place of sunrise. It represents the mind, knowledge, decisions, discernment, and knowledge. It is the Wand of Intent. In the Warrior’s Ethic of Feycraft, Air represents clarity, which is required to make choices from an ethical standpoint. We choose an internal ethical code over rigid, externally-imposed morality in someone's rule book. Decisions are usually "gray" in the real world and rarely easy; sometimes, we have to choose the least harmful path among multiple options, knowing that any action has a consequence. We use the Wand to navigate the winds of choice with discernment, and accept that sovereignty means the decision, and whatever consequence it carries, is ours alone.

South | Fire | The Athame

Pillar: Absolute Accountability and the Sword

The South is power at it's peak; it's high noon. It represents passion, desire, and purification. Fire doesn' apologize for the heat it carries, it simply is. The pillar of Absolute Accountability means that, when we draw the blade of our will to make a change in the world, we own it completely. We don't say things like, "everything happens for a reason" (even if it does). We don't have the option to hide behind "It's God's will," or the idea of "destiny," or "my Spirit Guides ..." to escape the consequences of our actions. Like the Athame, we are tempered by the fires of our experiences, standing by our results with honor, regardless of the outcome. This is also the place of shadow-integration, as the light of the fire casts the shadow; a warrior doesn't suppress the "darker" side, but harnesses it; it's the recognition that controlled anger is fuel for justice. It sets a boundary, and it's the part of us that knows that if that boundary is crossed, the fire bites back.

West | Water | The Cup

Pillar: Self-Sovereignty and Preservation

The West is the place of dusk, intuition, emotion. It's represented by the Cup of Life, the chalice. It reminds us that we cannot pour from an empty cup. Self-sovereignty is the act of guarding our own wellspring. To be of use to the Coven or the community, we must prioritize our own well-being, ensuring our emotional and spiritual depths are replenished. This is not "self-care," in the vein of pampering and bed-rotting, this strategic self-maintenance so that we can be of service. A warrior who is drained is a liability. We drink first from our own cup so that our service to others comes from a place of love, energy and compassion, not a desperate sacrifice.

North | Earth | The Pentacle

Pillar: The Duty of Competence

The North is the place of night, the Mountain that rises high into the night sky, the Earth. It's tool is the Penctalce, the anchor where the spiritual meets the physical. This is the place of Manifested Power: being a force, not a victim. It is our duty to be competent across all parts of our being: emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. We train with our daily practice so that we are capable of actually winning whatever battles we choose to fight (which we choose wisely, in the place of Air). The Pentacle reminds us that "meaning well" is not enough; we must have the grounding and the skill to make our will a physical reality in the world. This is the place of skill; there's an old adage that says, "It is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war." Meaning: we choose to remain peaceful, but we are capable of fierce battle should the gates of our garden be attacked.
